Monthly take-home pay
TSh 660,000
Annual take-home pay TSh 7,920,000
Income tax (PAYE) / month TSh 60,000
Income tax (PAYE) / year TSh 720,000
NSSF (10%) / month TSh 80,000
Total deductions / month TSh 140,000

Based on the Tanzania mainland monthly PAYE bands (0%–30%; tax-free up to TZS 270,000/month). Your NSSF contribution (10% of gross) comes off your pay before the bands are applied, so it lowers your tax as well as your take-home — the TRA reduces gross pay by approved retirement-fund contributions when working out PAYE. PSSSF members contribute 5% instead. An estimate — confirm with the TRA or a tax practitioner.

The bands

Tanzanian PAYE runs on monthly bands, with the first slice free of tax:

Monthly taxable payRate on that slice
First TSh270,0000%
Next TSh250,000 (to TSh520,000)8%
Next TSh240,000 (to TSh760,000)20%
Next TSh240,000 (to TSh1,000,000)25%
Above TSh1,000,00030%

The bands are progressive — only the slice inside each is taxed at that rate — so your effective rate is always lower than your top band, and a raise can never reduce your take-home pay.

Note the gentle start: the 8% band means the first steps above the threshold are taxed lightly, which is unusual and worth knowing if you are near it.

NSSF — 10%

The employee contribution to the National Social Security Fund is 10% of gross pay, with your employer contributing a further share. That is a substantial deduction by regional standards, and it is buying you something — retirement, invalidity and survivor benefits under the national scheme.

Two things worth doing that most contributors never do:

  • Request your contribution statement and check it against every job you have held. Deductions that were never remitted, or periods recorded under wrong details, are common — and a gap found now is usually fixable, while the same gap found at retirement rarely is;
  • Find out what the scheme actually pays, and on what qualifying conditions. Benefits go unclaimed regularly because families do not know they exist.

Even at 10%, treat it as a foundation rather than a complete plan — see the retirement calculator for what building above it looks like.

Checking your payslip

  1. Run your gross through the calculator and compare each line;
  2. Confirm NSSF at 10% is calculated on the correct base;
  3. Check the TSh270,000 tax-free slice has been applied;
  4. Identify every other deduction and confirm you agreed to it in writing;
  5. Keep your payslips — they are required for loan applications and are your evidence in any dispute.

What else takes a share

VAT is 18% on most goods and services — see the VAT calculator, including the common error of subtracting 18% from a VAT-inclusive price instead of dividing by 1.18.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PAYE different from this estimate?

Usually allowances or benefits treated differently, or an NSSF base that differs from your gross. Check each line and query differences with payroll in writing.

Does NSSF reduce my taxable pay?

Treatment depends on the arrangement — the calculator applies the standard approach. Confirm your specific position with the TRA or a registered practitioner.

Is 10% NSSF high?

It is substantial compared with several neighbouring systems, and it is matched by your employer — so the total going into your record is more than the amount deducted from you. That makes checking your statement more valuable, not less.

Should I refuse a raise to stay in a lower band?

Never. Only the additional slice is taxed at the higher rate.

How do I check my NSSF record?

Request a statement directly from NSSF using your identification, and do it after every job change.
